LIBRARY COMING SOON Moving Poco y Poco The building across from the bullring in the center of Ojochal has been acquired for a community library. This small space will be a nice introduction of the library into the community, everyone can learn how to use it and what it can do for them. The library is ready to be fixed up. Everyone is really excited about the project but there is still alot of groundwork to be done. Windows, A/C need to be bought and get them in place. There will be a work day to paint the roof, clean up the hardwood, sand the bars on windows and other odds and ends. Someone has offered to build the book shelves. The books are ready to be shipped, but a container company for this will need to be setup. |

AHPPA (Asociacion Humanitaria para la Proteccion Animal de Costa Rica) was founded September 14, 1992. We started out with just a few small cages for some stray dogs and cats. Over the years, AHPPA has added 30 large tiled pens for dogs - all of which are covered to protect the animals from wind and rain. Then there are two separate housing facilities for kittens and one for grown cats. The on-site veterinary clinic is complete with surgical tables, ultrasounds and other equipment. Our X-ray machine and darkroom are recent additions to tend to all the fractured animals who are brought in frequently at the shelter. At any given time there are approximately 70 - 80 adult dogs and 30 - 50 puppies. The "cathouse" usually has 40 - 60 adult cats and the kitten house usually has 30 - 40 kittens. We vaccinate, deworm and neuter the animals before they leave the shelter. All adoptions are free, but any donation is welcome. There are about 80 dogs and 50 cats adopted out per month. We put to sleep the incurably sick animals. We have 2 fulltime vets on staff, who take care of the animals at the shelter. We have our low/no cost neutering program, between 30 to 40 animals per day are neutered for people who cannot afford a private vet. One of our vet travels once a week to far away places to do sterilizations on-the- spot for those who cannot make it to our clinic. Costa Rica's former solution to animal overpopulation was to poison the animals in overcrowded areas. Our sterilization program has put a stop to this terrible practice. |
